The war in Ukraine is a grim reminder of the devastating effects of military conflict between nations. To better understand the challenges of warfare, the U.S. Government Publishing Office online bookstore provides a plethora of well-documented studies about military conflict. Here are two titles featuring critically important analyses of America’s engagement in recent war zones, and how the U.S. military interacts with civil organizations in order to effectively integrate military and civilian assets to the benefit of America’s defense and freedom.
Modern War in an Ancient Land: The United States Army in Afghanistan, 2001-2014 is an in-depth analysis of the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that was America’s response to the 9/11 attacks. It examines the U.S. intervention in Afghanistan in October 2001 and the thirteen-plus years of conflict that followed. During this conflict, Army commanders operated under the assumption that by securing Afghans and their fledgling national government, the U.S. military was protecting America and the Western way of life. It includes graphic depictions of war on the ground as well as multiple maps. This resource provides a comprehensive and historical perspective on “America’s longest war.”
Unity of Mission: Civilian Military Teams in War and Peace
provides readers with a revealing perspective on complex military operations. It offers unique insights by soldiers, AID workers, nongovernmental organizations, and others with on the ground experience. The essays found within Unity of Mission provide a rich, diverse, and candid commentary about what worked and what didn’t work. This book will be enormously helpful for anyone assigned to a military command, an embassy, or any international mission.

Want to take a trip to outer-space? Here’s a great (and inexpensive) way to experience the beauty of a world beyond Earth’s atmosphere. NASA’s new 2022 Explore Science planner features spectacular photography of NASA’s exploration of our planet.
Here are a few excerpts from the calendar:
January — Return to the Veil Nebula. “The Veil Nebula is the visible portio
n of the nearby Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant formed roughly 10,000 years ago by the death of a massive star. The Veil Nebula’s progenitor star—which was 20 times the mass of our Sun—lived fast and died young, ending its life in a cataclysmic release of energy. Despite this stellar explosion, the shock waves and debris from the supernova sculpted the Veil Nebula’s delicate tracery of ionized gas, creating a scene of surprising astronomical beauty.”
April — GOES West Captures Two Hurricanes and the Smoke of California Wildfires. “On August 25, 2020, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) West captured this dynamic GeoColor image of North America, where wildfires ravaged the drought-plagued West and Southwest United States. The resulting hazy gray shroud of smoke spread over much of the country. Over the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Laura can be seen heading toward Louisiana and eastern Texas while the
remnants of Hurricane Marco swirl over the Southeast. In the image, smoke can be seen filling California’s Central Valley.”
October— Something Out There Is Watching You. “Do you ever look up at the night sky and feel like someone, or something, may be looking back at you? This Halloween image from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope may convince you that you are right! But don’t expect to see these cosmic eyes without a face if you search the night sky with your own binoculars or telescope, as they are completely cloaked from view in visible light. They can only be found by telescopes that can see infrared light.”
Hurry and purchase this popular calendar at the GPO U.S. Government Online Bookstore while supplies last!

Bill of Rights Day is celebrated annually on December 15. It’s a great time to reflect on two fundamental resources that are the foundation of our nation’s reliance on laws that govern. Our Nation’s beginning started when our founding fathers wrote and approved the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. The Bill of Rights were created and placed at the opening of the Constitution. These essential individual rights are the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Initially there were no individual rights as the founders were focused on establishing a new form of government. However, many citizens at the time recognized the importance of individual rights and wanted to make sure essential personal freedoms were included. Thus, the Bill of Rights came to be.
The U.S. Government Publishing Office Bookstore provides many federal titles describing the contents of the Constitution as well as other historical documents.
Americans can keep the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence handy in this pocket-size booklet containing the complete text of the two core documents of American democracy; the Constitution of the United States, and, the Declaration of Independence. You can use this comprehensive booklet to stay connected with the principles that have made America a bastion of democracy throughout its history.
To learn more about America’s history, the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) has created a series of flash cards Learn About the United States: Quick Civics Lessons. This set of educational flash cards were especially designed for new immigrants to more easily learn about the history and wonder of becoming an American citizen.
These are great resources for civics, Government, and history teachers and students.

The 4th of July holiday is a great time for our Nation to reflect on the blessings of being a beacon of hope and democratic freedoms. There’s no better time than the days ahead to read about American History and remember why we celebrate Independence Day. Visit the U.S. Government Bookstore and start your journey back to the years that shaped America to this day.
Our American History collection of titles offer unique insights into our Nation’s early past, including an extensive collection about the history of the American Indian tribes. Also, consider the beautiful set of colorful posters depicting important events in the history of America such as the Philadelphia 1776 (Poster), and the British Redcoat, 1775-1783 (Poster). These posters provide detailed information about the period during the Revolutionary War. The Continental Soldier in the War for American Independence (Poster) features a different set of historic details and colorful graphics about the American Army during the Revolutionary War.
Be amazed by the seldom told stories of those who fought to ensure our Union was free of European domination and how the American West was once the domain of native Americans. The GPO Bookstore offers poster art and interesting stories from the Revolutionary War to enjoy, honor and memorialize America’s earliest days. Reading these publications is a perfect way to celebrate the founding of America, 245 years ago on Independence Day, July 4th, 1776. You can find it all by visiting https://bookstore.gpo.gov/catalog/pre-us-colonial-american-history.
