NEW Implementation Science at a Glance eBook

August 2, 2019

What exactly is implementation science? According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Division of Cancer Control & Population Sciences, “implementation science is the study of methods to promote the adoption and integration of evidence-based practices, interventions, and policies into routine health care and public health settings to improve the impact on population health.”

Implementation Science at a Glance (ePub) offers a-practical guidance on the science for cancer control practitioners, policy makers, and cancer control and implementation researchers.

While many effective interventions can reduce cancer risk, incidence, and death, as well as enhance quality of life, they are of limited benefit if they cannot be delivered to those in need. Implementation science, as presented in the guide aims to improve public health by bridging the knowledge gap between research and practice to help communities in need.

The guide is organized into a four-stage framework: assess, prepare, implement, and evaluate. Each stage poses important questions for practical considerations. It also includes four case studies to illustrate how practitioners are successfully applying implementation science in their cancer control programs.

Through summaries of key theories, methods, and models, the guide shows how greater use of implementation science can support the effective adoption of evidence-based interventions in real-world settings.

After receiving a cancer diagnosis, one of the most important things a person can do is educate themselves on what they can expect to go through and prepare both mentally and physically for the road ahead. So, where does a newly diagnosed cancer patient turn for guidance?

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recently released a series of booklets to help those facing cancer.

Taking Time to Support People with Cancer. Taking Time is a booklet for people newly diagnosed with cancer. It provides important information such as dealing with the various feelings you may go through after diagnosis, support from family and close friends, talking to your health care team, and dealing with a new self-image.

The NCI also provides help for managing the pain associated with cancer. Cancer Pain Control covers the types and causes of cancer pain. It discusses the importance of talking about your pain as well as developing a pain control plan and medicines to help treat cancer pain. It also discusses additional ways to control pain such as meditation and relaxation to help with stress and depression, as well as how pain can affect your thoughts and feeling and paying for pain medicines.

Eating can also be a challenge while going through cancer. In Eating Hints, people with cancer learn what to eat before, during, and after cancer treatment. This authoritative booklet provides tips about common types of eating problems and how to manage them, as well as tips about food and drinks to help manage your diet and how to prepare your food to avoid infections. It also provides suggestions for returning to healthy eating once your cancer treatment is over. For Spanish speaking individuals, the NCI also offers Consejos de alimentación, the Spanish version of Eating Hints.

Whether you are a cancer patient or know someone who is, download these FREE supportive booklets now. Cancer is no longer in charge of your life.

New Modernizing Learning eBook

May 31, 2019

A Review of the forward thinking education publication, “Modernizing Learning – Building the Future Learning Ecosystem”

Have you noticed the growth of long distance education over the past decade?

According to U.S. Department of Education’s 2015 estimate, over 5.8 million students enrolled in “distant education courses at degree-granting postsecondary institutions.”

As a matter of fact, online education has been rapidly growing for over a decade to allow universal access and usage of digital technologies to expand lessons and talent management development for 21st Century competencies.

Modernizing Learning now available for free download in PDF format, emphasizes “future learning ecosystem” defined as a transformation from traditional learning practices to “curated lifelong learning tailored to individuals and delivered across diverse locations, media and period of time.” Modernizing Learning provides a blueprint for connecting learning experiences across time and space for Government, Military, Academia, K-12 teachers, and more.

The text, produced by the Department of Defense’s Advanced Distribution Learning arm, notes historical and cultural changes in the learning sphere from an industrial model to an information model that may require organizational shifts, new assessment methods, and delivery vehicles. Several change models, an implementation plan, and strategic planning are presented as a path forward to this new learning environment.

Some helpful tips to consider if you are planning to upgrade your learning modules for 21st Century competencies include defining standards, specifications, vocabularies, and governance strategy. This comprehensive resource for workforce trainers, instructional designers, and teachers also explores data security and learner privacy within applications, especially social networking, data sharing, and data collection that may result in tracking a student’s progress.

The authors conclude that automation, data analytics, and interdisciplinary stewardship will continue in the learning ecosystem for years into the future.

A Nation Abounds with Women’s History & Achievements

March 14, 2019

The 2019 Women’s History Month theme is “Visionary Women: Champions of Peace & Nonviolence.”  The theme honors “women who have led efforts to end war, violence, and injustice and pioneered the use of nonviolence to change society.” (citation: National Women’s History Museum/Women’s History Month)

Women have made significant contributions to history, culture, and society. Too often in the past their energy, dedication, and intellect in championing human rights, creating new innovations, and in public service, have gone unheralded. In recent years, women in record numbers are now serving in the U.S. Congress.

  • In 2019, 127 (106D, 21R) women hold seats in the United States Congress, comprising 23.7% of the 535 members.
  • 25 women (25%) serve in the U.S. Senate.
  • 102 women (23.4%) serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Four women (2D, 2R) also represent American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in the United States House of Representatives. (citation: Center for American Women and Politics, Eagleton Institute of Politics, Rutgers University)

In this historical tribute, Women in Congress, 1917-2017, also available for free digital download, you can read about female Congressional members who have been elected through the 114th Congress and their contributions to the Nation.

You can also read about how women have played a key role in our military and Government through these resources:

The Women’s Army Corps, 1945-1978

A Contemporary History of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps

Women on the Frontlines of Peace and Security

Mixed Gender Basic Training: The U.S. Army Experience, 1973-2004

Women in the Federal Government: Ambitions and Achievements

The Nation can be proud of its champions of women’s rights and their commitment to advancing participation within communities and societies to build peace and equality.

The Premier Handbook for Anyone Contributing to the Rehabilitation of America’s Wounded Warriors

November 7, 2018

Soldiers returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan face enormous challenges to successfully re-enter society.

To achieve a life of self-sufficiency, former soldiers are challenged with overcoming difficult emotional, psychological and physical impairment issues. The path to recovery is often hindered by Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and brain injuries.

The Borden Institute, an organization within the Department of the Army dedicated to providing the military community with the medical information needed to address the many service-related medical issues faced by active duty and veterans, has released a new eBook.

Promoting Successful Integration

This Borden Institute handbook, offered in free eBook format, is intended to be a comprehensive source of information for the broad military community, including uniformed military personnel, family members, civilian personnel of federal agencies, veterans, and all people who contribute to the success of wounded, injured, and ill service members.

The information in the book addresses the reality that there is no one solution. It provides a multi-faceted approach for those impacted by service-related medical issues to consider in seeking out the pathways to success that best suit their individual situation.

This free downloadable eBook is available from the US Government Online Bookstore in an ePub, MOBI or PDF format. It’s also available in PDF format for free from EBSCOhost, and ProQuest. Additionally, it can be found within the Apple iBookstore/iTunes, Barnes and Noble Nook site, Google Play eBookstore, and Overdrive platforms by searching ePub ISBN: 9780160939839.
