National Immunization Awareness Month

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), a yearly observance highlighting routine vaccinations. This year’s theme, “Protect Yourself. Protect Your Family. Protect Your Community,” emphasizes the importance of vaccination for everyone, regardless of age or health status. Vaccines are safe and effective and can help protect you and your loved ones from serious diseases.

During NIAM, you can:

  • Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about your vaccination status.
  • Get vaccinated against preventable diseases.
  • Volunteer to help with local immunization events.

Vaccination is also important for travel. “Before you see the world,” a good first step is to get the International Certificate of Vaccination as Approved by the World Health Organization, available from the U.S Government Bookstore. Also known as the Yellow Card, it is required for entering countries with increased health risks. It provides text in both English and French and is your health passport to see the world.

However, before booking your trip, you must visit a healthcare provider and receive the required vaccinations, which will vary depending on your destination. The doctor must list vaccinations given on the form per the instructions, then sign and date it for the Certificate of Vaccination to be valid. Every traveler must keep the certificate “yellow card” on their person while traveling as it serves as a medical passport and proof of vaccination. With your Yellow Card in hand, you’re ready to plan the next venture of a lifetime.

Vaccines are one of the most effective ways to prevent disease.
