Best Selling Federal Government Books

January 1, 2024

It’s a new year, and now is a great time to reflect on the accomplishments made during the previous year. For the U.S. Government Bookstore, this means highlighting our best-selling Federal publications chosen by our customers over the past year. We will highlight some of our customers’ favorite government publications in this blog for the next several months.

The definition of “best-selling” can vary but generally refers to publications with exceptionally high sales figures. Here are a few notable topics that cover some of our most popular publications that deeply resonate with readers, securing their place as best-sellers.

  • Civics and Citizenship: Preparing to become a United States citizen and learning about the American system of government is extremely popular with our customers each year.
  • NASA Publications: From stunning space exploration imagery to scientific reports and educational materials, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) publications capture the public’s imagination and inform them about the universe and our place in it.
  • Tax Guides: The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) publishes annual tax guides covering individual and business income taxes. While primarily instructional, these guides are in high demand during tax season, making them consistent best-sellers.

Without further ado, this month’s best-seller feature, Learn About the United States: Quick Civics Lessons, helps immigrants study for the civics and English portions of the naturalization test. There are 100 civics history and government questions on the test. For example, “What is the supreme law of the land in America?” This question and others are part of the updated civics flash cards for the U.S. Naturalization test. It can also be used in a classroom setting or as a fun family game civics refresher to check how much you know about the nation in which you live, the freedoms you enjoy, and the responsibilities that come from citizenship.

Preparing for American Citizenship

March 16, 2023

If you are a new immigrant seeking to become an American citizen, an important responsibility in becoming an American citizen is to prepare for the naturalization test. The U.S. Citizens and Immigration Services (USCIS) takes great care to provide study resources designed to be as easy and accessible as possible during the transition to U.S. citizenship.

The USCIS recently released its new reading Vocabulary Flash Cards to assist immigrants with studying for the English reading portion of the naturalization test. With a primary focus on U.S. civics and history topics, these new flashcards can be used as an instructional tool for citizenship preparation, in a classroom setting for teaching, or as a resource for self-study. To help with learning, there is space on the back of each flashcard where immigrant students can practice writing the words in English or their language.

Another great resource is Preparing for The Naturalization Test: A Pocket Study Guide.   To become a naturalized U.S. citizen, you must pass the naturalization test. This guide will help you prepare for the naturalization test. It provides civics test questions, answers, and the reading and writing vocabulary to help you study.

These essential resources from the USCIS will help immigrants learn about U.S. history and government.

Essential Information for New Immigrants

October 20, 2022

Are you a new immigrant in the United States? As a nation of immigrants, the Federal Government can assist your transition to become a full-fledged citizen by producing easy-to-follow lessons to help immigrants settle in the United States. Welcome to the United States: A Guide for New Immigrants provides a general summary of rights, responsibilities, and procedures essential to becoming permanent residents.

If you are a recent immigrant or know someone who is in the process of becoming a citizen, this comprehensive guide offers critically important information about ensuring legal status and finding support agencies and organizations that can assist with the processing of documents or essential services on the path to citizenship.

Produced by the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS), the Guide covers the following important matters new arrivals will need to know when preparing to become a citizen:

  • Your Rights and Responsibilities as a Permanent Resident, and,
  • How to Maintain Your Permanent Resident Status

There are also examples of how to learn English and what to expect regarding health care and other Federal benefits.

While the primary audience for this resource is new immigrants, it is also helpful for individuals already preparing for the U.S. Naturalization Test and attorneys assisting immigrants during the U.S. Naturalization process, and public libraries, especially in regions and cities where new immigrants reside.
