Understanding Tomorrow’s Battles

April 2, 2026

Traditional battlelines no longer define the global stage, but by the volatile realities of irregular warfare landscape where cyberattacks, proxy escalations, and sophisticated disinformation campaigns are the primary weapons. As the current tensions in the Middle East reshape the geopolitical map and test the limits of regional stability, understanding these tactics has become more than an academic exercise; it is a strategic necessity.

Honoring Our Heroes: National Vietnam War Veterans Day

March 26, 2026

March 29 marks the anniversary of the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam in 1973. While it took decades for their sacrifices to be formally recognized, the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 officially designated this day to honor the 2.7 million Americans who served in uniform.

The Vietnam War was a period of immense complexity and sacrifice. More than 58,000 service members gave their lives, and countless others returned to a nation deeply divided.

A turning point in public support came during the 1968 Tet Offensive, a massive, coordinated attack by North Vietnamese forces during the lunar new year. Though U.S. and South Vietnamese forces eventually repelled the assault, the intensity of the conflict accelerated the eventual withdrawal of American forces a few years later.

The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) maintains the official records of this era, from the 1974 Presidential Proclamation to detailed military histories. For those looking to understand the intricacies of the war, the GPO Bookstore offers several definitive titles:

  • Advice and Support: The Final Years, 1965–1973: An in-depth look at the U.S. Army’s advisory efforts to South Vietnamese forces.
  • Taking the Offensive, Oct 1966–Sept 1967: A tactical breakdown of major operations like ATTLEBORO and JUNCTION CITY, featuring maps and illustrations of the U.S. effort to disrupt enemy supply lines.
  • Stemming the Tide, May 1965 to October 1966: Provides a balanced look at the U.S. Army’s first 18 months of ground combat in Vietnam, detailing how search and destroy operations and airmobile warfare successfully stemmed the communist tide while revealing the workforce shortages that complicated the transition to a full-scale offensive.

Today, we honor the millions who served in Vietnam. We salute their courage and commit to keeping their stories alive for future generations.

The New U.S. Coast Guard Incident Management Handbook 2025 is Here!

January 21, 2026

Big news for maritime safety! The new U.S. Coast Guard Incident Management Handbook (IMH) 2025 is now available. This updated guide builds on the firm foundation of previous versions, especially the 2014 handbook, to boost the Coast Guard’s incident response capabilities and strengthen partnerships.

Why a New Handbook?

The maritime world is constantly changing. From complex cyber threats to the need for better teamwork with national and international partners, the demands on the Coast Guard’s incident management system are more dynamic than ever. The 2025 IMH tackles these modern challenges head-on, adding the latest National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) best practices.

It is designed to assist Coast Guard personnel in using the ICS during response operations. The IMH is intended to be an easy reference job aid for responders. It is not a policy document, but rather guidance for response personnel. During the development of the IMH, it was recognized that eighty percent of all response operations share common principles, procedures, and processes. The other twenty percent of response operations are unique to the type of incident, such as a search and rescue case or an oil spill. The handbook is laid out so that the generic information applicable to all responses is presented up-front.

Updates and Highlights of the 2025 IMH:

  • Alignment with Updated NIMS Doctrine: This document incorporates the latest changes to ensure standardized response protocols across federal, state, and local partners.
  • Enhanced Response Strategies for Severe Weather: Provides comprehensive guidelines for severe weather events and Presidentially Declared Disasters to improve preparedness and operational effectiveness.
  • Cyber Incident Response Integration: Includes updated protocols for managing cyber-related events, emphasizing cybersecurity measures for protecting critical infrastructure.
  • Utilization of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS): This section highlights the role of UAS in improving situational awareness, data collection, and response efficiency.
  • Focus on Responder Resilience: This approach emphasizes critical incident stress management (CISM) and responder resilience, offering resources to support personnel’s mental health and well-being.

The U.S. Coast Guard Incident Management Handbook 2025 shows the service’s commitment to readiness and excellence. It’s a proactive step to adapt to a changing operational environment and ensure the safety and security of our waterways. Understanding and using this new handbook will be vital for all responders and maritime professionals.

Naval History & Heritage Command Publications

May 29, 2024

The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), formerly the Naval Historical Center, is an Echelon II command of the United States Navy responsible for the preservation, analysis, and dissemination of U.S. naval history and heritage. The NHHC publishes various materials related to U.S. naval history and is a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning more about U.S. naval history.

Here are a few popular NHHC publications available from the U.S. Government Online Bookstore:

War in the Shallows: U.S. Navy and Riverine Warfare in Vietnam, 1965-1968 explores the operations of the Navy’s three inshore task forces from 1965 to 1968. America’s naval forces developed the most extensive maritime blockade in modern naval history and fought pitched battles against Viet Cong units in the Mekong Delta and elsewhere.

Battle Behind Bars: Navy and Marine POWs in the Vietnam War (PDF ePub). War in the jungles and an insufferable prisoner-of-war situation inflicted special hardships on the Vietnam-era POWs. This (ePub) describes their experiences—the similarities and the differences—and how the POWs coped with untreated wounds and other malaises, systematic torture, and boredom. The creative strategies they devised to stay fit, track time, resist the enemy, and communicate with one another.

End of the Saga: The Maritime Evacuation of South Vietnam and Cambodia (ePub) explores in detail and with photographs and illustrations the April 1975 withdrawal of the American Navy and Marine Corps from Cambodia and South Vietnam (with refugees) and the aftermath in Southeast Asia.  This withdrawal showed the courage and skill of the American forces, who had to carry out large-scale and complicated evacuations despite criticism of the military by many Americans back home who had lost confidence in the military and government during the protracted conflict.

Whether you are a student, a scholar, or simply a history buff, the NHHC has something to offer you.

Veterans Day

November 8, 2023

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11 to honor military veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

Originally known as Armistice Day, it was founded to commemorate the end of World War I on November 11, 1918, with the signing of the Armistice between the Allies and Germany. On June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the law that struck out the word “Armistice” and replaced it with “Veterans.” Therefore, November 11 became a day to honor all veterans who have served the country.

The Government Publishing Office (GPO) Bookstore makes available Federal Benefits for Veterans, Dependents, and Survivors from the Veterans Health Administration. Veterans of the United States armed forces may be eligible for a broad range of benefits and services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This comprehensive resource provides a complete summary of all the Federal benefits available to veterans and their families. It’s must-have, up-to-date information on the benefits and rights veterans deserve for serving our country.

Here are some ways to honor veterans:

  • Attend a Veterans Day parade or ceremony.
  • Visit a veterans hospital or nursing home and spend time with veterans.
  • Donate to a veterans organization.
  • Write a letter of thanks to a veteran.
  • Learn about the history of Veterans Day and the sacrifices made by veterans.
  • Talk to veterans about their service.

Even small gestures can make a big difference to veterans. By taking the time to honor them, we show our appreciation for their service and sacrifice.
